Date: 03/13/25
Cahill announced today that Jonathan Galea has joined the firm as a counsel in its globally recognized Digital Assets and Emerging Technology practice (CahillNXT) in London.
Having been deeply involved with the crypto asset sector for the past dozen years, Jonathan is one of the first crypto-native lawyers to practice in Europe and is a strong advocate for Bitcoin adoption and open finance. His clients range from major crypto exchanges to prominent decentralized finance projects and stablecoin issuers.
Jonathan recently served as lead external EU counsel to two of the top five stablecoin issuers by market capitalization, helping them navigate the intricacies of the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). He has also assisted multiple high-profile crypto exchanges in obtaining their regulatory licenses with the national competent authorities in Malta and Liechtenstein, as well as assisting them in complying with their obligations under the relevant frameworks.
“I have known Jonathan and respected his work for many years. He is one of the very top lawyers in the crypto space in Europe. Jonathan’s arrival underscores the global commitment that we have to major emerging technologies at CahillNXT,” said Lewis Rinaudo Cohen, Co-Chair of the group. “By expanding in London, the CahillNXT practice will be in an even better position to assist clients around the world with their most sophisticated legal needs pertaining to crypto assets and blockchain technology.”
Samson A. Enzer, Co-Chair of CahillNXT, added, “Jonathan has a passion for the use and adoption of Bitcoin and other crypto assets and believes strongly that providing effective legal advice to clients requires a deep understanding of the nuances of the issues at stake. His ability to break down the barriers between law and technology in this area will truly help differentiate us in the field, and I am delighted to have him on our team.”
Having done extensive work in policy and legal drafting, Jonathan is a co-author of Malta’s pioneering Virtual Financial Assets framework. He has also consulted numerous regulatory entities across multiple jurisdictions, including the European Banking Authority, the Malta Financial Services Authority, the Financial Intelligence & Analysis Unit (Malta), and the Financial Services Agency in Japan.
“Cahill has shown a level of commitment to being leaders in the crypto asset space that is not seen at many firms,” Jonathan said. “I am excited to bring my crypto native experience in the EU and elsewhere to Cahill and to work alongside Lewis, Sam, and the rest of their outstanding team.”
Jonathan is a frequent speaker and has served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta, teaching about the history of crypto assets and the taxonomy of crypto projects over the years. He received both his LL.D. and LL.B. from the University of Malta.
